[3] For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.
The author paints a word picture as he declares that his days vanish like smoke that is here one moment and gone the next moment. He says that his bones burn like glowing embers.
Whatever the author was going through, one can sense he felt that his life was about to come to an end. We don’t know if that was literal or just an overwhelming problem.
No doubt most people have faced difficult times they thought would finish them off. However, in such times, we must remember our lives belong to God and not ourselves. It is up to God to decide when our time is up.
What does all of this bad stuff have to do with verse 3? Everything. The point is one can get to a point where one feels like their life is all over. The remedy will be seen later in this chapter.
[4] My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread. [5] By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.
The Psalmist is so depressed that even the idea of eating food is unappealing. This was a feeling of being so depressed, he was getting physically unhealthy due to a lack of food. This is a very serious situation. Due to his pain, he is experiencing other troubles. These painful moments affect and afflict his life.
