Psalm 5 is a lament Psalm that addresses a very difficult time in David's life. Although we are not told exactly how old David was, we do know this was a time when David's enemies were verbally opposing him and his rule. In Old Testament times, a blessing or a curse was an appeal to God to do what the curse or blessing specified. David's enemies are cursing him in hopes that some divine power would destroy and defeat him. In this chapter, David is in distress because of the lies and boasts of his adversaries (101:7). He identifies his own cause to be the Lord's cause, thus the attacks on him became attacks on God Himself.
