[21] To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem; [22] When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
Since these verses do not describe any date in history (there has never been a date when the nations of the world have come to the land of Israel to celebrate God) they must be prophetic. During the future millennial reign of Christ on this earth (Revelation 20:4-6), believers will literally rule the world from Jerusalem.
The thought of this future reality brings comfort to the Psalmist whose hope is in the one true God that rules over the present affairs of his life and will one day rule over the entire earth.
The point of verse 22 is that there will be a day where representatives of all nations will assemble to acknowledge Jesus as “God of the world”. This prophetic event is something to be anticipated by all Christians. This universal worship occurs at the Lord's return to Zion (see Isaiah 2:1-5; 66:23-24, Zechariah 14:16-21).
[23] He weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days.
The psalmist is reminded of his present reality that he is going through suffering. He pleads for God not to take his life prematurely. Perhaps he is thinking that instead of living to an old age, he is going to die now at a much younger age.
No matter how long one lives, life is relatively short and it feels like we are dying way too soon. Therefore, it is essential to learn to live for God with whatever time span He has given us.
